Ice and Coal Company
Cecil Leonard's Ice and Coal Company was located at 317 Montecito Drive. It was a two-story bunker that was filled from the road above and fed into his truck below. Cecil supplied sand, gravel, and cement to the town. Next door to the bunker, he sold ice and coal, which he delivered to residents’ homes. There were no refrigerators so blocks of ice were used. Ice blocks were put in a special box that would keep food cold until the ice melted. Once the ice melted it would be replaced with a new block. Homes and businesses had no central heating. Instead, coal was used for “old-fashioned” furnaces. Coal was added to keep fires burning. Some people used kerosene heaters and fireplaces to warm up their homes.
Did you know ice blocks were gathered from frozen rivers and brought down by the train?
Did you know that breaker boys were children who were coal miners and usually worked 14-16 hours a day?
