Railroad Park (Menke Park)
Park Day, February 22, 1908. Members of the Women's Club
Railroad Park became Menke Park in the 1950’s. It was the square around the train station and the center of Corte Madera. It was established in 1916 and preserved by the Women’s Club. Tamalpais Avenue was originally First Street and ran in front of the Parkside Hotel. It was the first street in town – hence, First Street! The Women’s Club helped change the muddy roads around the Railroad Station. For a few years the Square had an outdoor dance platform.
Did you know that in 1903 Richard Steiff designed the Teddy Bear, named after Theodore Roosevelt who refused to shoot a trapped bear?
